How To Target Students All Year Round

Return to blog

British American Group / 21.08.18 / Industry

Fresher’s Week is the week brands come out of the shadows in their hundreds to tap into the student market and showcase the best they have to offer. Fresher’s Week is extremely successful for all brands involved and can completely transform a student’s perspective of a brand, but wait – why only focus on one week of the year when there are 51 other weeks in the year?

Engaging students at Fresher’s is only part of the job; maintaining the momentum and continuing to engage with them all year round is the key to forming great student relationships and turning them into customers.

Here are our best tips on how you can engage students all year round, not just at Fresher’s!

Get Online

It’s no secret that students spend a lot of their time online, so that’s a good place to start. Whilst social media isn’t for everyone, producing sharable content that students would like to read and getting a presence on popular student orientated websites will boost your brand awareness as well as help you continue to engage with students throughout the rest of the year. Something as simple as hosting a competition or releasing a PR around a topic that students will be intrigued by will help amplify their interest in your brand.

Be Realistic

Yes, students have a disposable income but this doesn’t mean they have £££ to spend on impulse purchases each and every month. You need to be realistic and keep their income in mind, as well as making a note of important dates and time periods where they may have more money to spend such as the holiday season or when they get their student loan! Don’t only engage them with promotional materials though, as this may damage the relationship you have built with them.

Word Of Mouth Advertising

The single most powerful form of brand exposure on campus is word of mouth, you can’t beat it. A sure tactic for making your brand more relatable and approachable is to get students on board as brand ambassadors; their role is to remind students how great your brand is, this is attractive to many students as they are always eager to find part time work too.

Discounts & Prizes

Whenever they can, students like to save their money so it goes further which is why they are always on the hunt for a student discount or to save them a few pounds here and there. A permanent student discount is a solid solution to entice students to keep coming back to you but ad hoc competitions will drive buzz around your brand and keep bringing your products to the front of their minds.
