How To Advertise Your Startup To Students

Return to blog

British American Group / 14.05.18 / Industry

18-30 year old students are often a desired demographic for advertisers and businesses alike due to their lack of brand loyalty and openness to try new things. Not only this, students are on the path to graduating, starting well paid careers and beginning families of their own which could lead to lifelong brand loyalty for brands who target them right in the beginning.

University students are extremely savvy at identifying advertising and don’t like to feel as though they are being sold to, so how do you gain this powerhouse demographic as customers?

Embrace Video As A Platform

Students are one of the few demographics that have steered away from traditional television and prefer watching videos and series on platforms such as YouTube and Netflix instead. Even on Facebook, the posts that get the most attention often contain funny videos that students can share with their friends. So how can you adopt video to draw in students as customers? Incorporate video into your marketing strategy and on your website with informative and entertaining content that is relevant to a student’s life such as how to relax after a day at unis; don’t forget to incorporate some clever product placement of your own startup products and services!

Participate in Seminars

Especially in business classes, they would appreciate insight from a startup founder like you to share your experiences and tips. Contact local universities and see if they are interested in hearing you speak at a lecture or at an upcoming event, not only will this help out students who are also looking to become entrepreneurs themselves but will also help you name drop your product!

Offer A Discount

Although students don’t have the smallest disposable incomes, they do appreciate a deal or discount when it is offered to them. Have you created a revolutionary product that is going to change the student experience forever? Offer it at a discount or a limited time deal so that students can get a taste of your product before telling their friends and splashing out on the full size product. Even better, offer a student discount permanently so that students always get 10% or 20% off!

Student Ambassadors Are Your Friends

If you really want to infiltrate the student market with the news of your startup, you’re going to need to have someone on the inside. Student brand ambassadors are students themselves so know how to communicate well with their peers, which makes them the perfect candidates for promoting your product or service. Supply your ambassadors with some free samples, coupons and flyers to distribute on campus or at upcoming events and you will see interest in your brand skyrocket.

Go Digital

Students are constantly on their laptops or mobile phones, in their free time and in their study periods, so what better way to get their attention than in a digital magazine specifically sent to just students? Invest in an advertisement, interview, giveaway or exclusive deal that can be sent out to as many or as little students as your business can cater to via a fully interactive magazine that includes all the things students love to read about.
