Students are often thought of as being a financially unstable group of people that only spend money on drinks and fast food in their local bar, but in reality, this could not be further from the truth. When it comes to advertising, students are one of the most important groups that you should be targeting, and depending on what it is you are selling, they can be absolutely crucial to your marketing strategy.

Remember, while students may have a reputation for spending all their money on nights out, these young adults make up one of the largest and most important age demographics – 18-30-year-olds. Students are often more care-free and impulsive which makes them more likely to try out new products and services.

Not only are they more open-minded, students are big influencers in the marketing world. Many students buy products or use services thanks to word of mouth. If you can engage a few students with your advertising campaign, they will unknowingly advertise your product or service free of charge to hundreds of more people with the same interests as them, through word of mouth, student papers and social media.

Students are new in the world of buying and subscribing to services, and in this sense, they are the easiest demographic to market to, as unlike older generations, they do not have brand loyalty or used to one particular brand. This means you have a great opportunity to convert them to your brand or service, and that if you speak to them and gain their trust, you could have a new customer for life. This means frequently changing and improving your offerings to ensure that they stay faithful to your brand and don’t go elsewhere.

To get the attention of students with your marketing, it is important to be innovative and speak to them in a way they connect with. Make use of popular student publications and on-site advertising on campuses to reach out and be as direct as possible. You will want to hire student brand ambassadors to work on marketing campaigns to make them really effective and to achieve maximum impact; no one knows what makes students tick and how they like to be engaged, then students themselves!
