You’ve heard it time and time again that millennials are the social media generation and that if you want to gain a millennial as a customer then you need to be present on their news feeds, timelines and so on. Whilst this is all technically true, that doesn’t help much with getting a millennial to decide to enter your store whilst walking down the high street (unless they’ve seen your online ads).
In fact surveys show that despite millennials loving social media, 82% of millennials prefer shopping in physical stores than online!
Why Target Millennials?
There are many reasons that millennials are desirable consumers. Both the younger and older end of the millennial spectrum are in the ‘buying’ point of their life where they are in their prime earning period and are looking to get married, buy homes, invest etc. As well as this, millennials are a lot more brand loyal than price conscious compared other older demographics.

Let us explain. Social media is such a powerful platform between millennials; they love to share what they’re doing and where they’re doing it with their peers. What better way to get free publicity than by encouraging millennials to share their experience online? Many retail stores have taken up this approach by creating their own hashtags for people to tag their tweets on Twitter when they are trying on an outfit in a branded mirror in the changing room or eating at a restaurant. Adding small details like this to your menu or marketing material can make a real difference in your stores engagement, especially if you incentivise your audience for sharing!
Streamline Your Store
Millennials much prefer shopping in stores that have a clear layout and have attractive displays rather than a unorganised shop that is full to the brim! A complete remodel is not necessary to please this age group, by simply creating more space around your store for millennials to browse and clearly see what you are offering will make them more likely to enter your store initially but also keep returning if they like what you are offering.
Educated Sales Staff
Millennials are a generation that are in the know. Known to do a lot of prior research before large purchases, millennials enter your store already knowing what they want. Millennials much prefer ease of checkout over hands on sales staff so educating your customer service staff on when to approach millennials and when to leave them to their own devices may be necessary so you don’t scare them off by being too hands on!
